Sarah Ray, A ray of hope in the fight against breast cancer

Sarah was an active, educated, spirited, well spoken 23 year old. On July 15th, 2002 she received some devastating news. For a young woman who doesn’t smoke, eats well, exercises regularly and gets plenty of rest, the diagnosis was unbelievable - breast cancer. “When you’re faced with your own mortality at the age of 23, a lot of things become clear.” explains Sarah. “You learn who your friends are and you truly understand what’s important in life.”

With her contagious spirit and charismatic personality, Sarah has gained a lot of supporters who have taken up her fight against breast cancer. Friends, family members and co-workers have rallied behind her, and in the fall of 2002, spawned the Booby Ball. “My friends wanted to support my fight,” says Sarah. The 2003 fundraiser—complete with cocktails, cuisine, entertainment and a silent-auction—raised over $45,000, while the 2004 event grossed $57,000;not bad for a gathering of friends.

This is an event which started as a quest to raise a sick friend’s spirits and has quickly evolved into a annual affair that raises thousands of dollars for young women like Sarah Ray and the thousands of others touched by this challenging disease. Sarah represents the new face of breast cancer - out in the open, freely discussed, and its victims celebrated and supported by a large circle of friends. Sarah’s ray of hope keeps shining brighter and farther!
